DECEMBER 1st 2020 - Urgent Appeal for Doctor Ahmadreza Djalali

Earlier today CEEP sent variants of the following message to Prime Minister Trudeau, Foreign Affairs Minister Champagne and the European Union through FIDU as part of the urgent appeal for Doctor Ahmadreza Djalali

Dr. Djalali’s is an Iranian-Swedish disaster medicine doctor, lecturer and researcher with over 700 citations on Disaster Management and Emergency Medicine. He was a key figure in establishing the Università del Piemonte Orientale (CRIMEDIM) Research Center in Emergency and Disaster.

In April 2016, when he was visiting Iran, following an invitation from the University of Tehran and Shiraz University, he was arrested upon order of the Ministry of Intelligence and Security, without a valid warrant or reason for arrest. He was held for nine months, accused of espionage and then sentenced to death without benefit of a lawyer and without ever seeing his case files. He has remained in Evin prison since this time and his health has severely deteriorated. The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has been denied information about his detention and trial and have published their opinion on the case in November 2017.

On 30 November, Nature reported that execution could occur as early as 1 December, today.

Dr. Djalali came to Iran to attend two conferences on Disaster Medicine and as a caregiver to his mother. His treatment has been shameful, dishonourable, unethical and cruel. CEEP joins the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians, Amnesty International, the Human Rights Experts of the United Nations, the European Parliament, The Scholars at Risk Network, The European University Association and 121 Nobel laureates in calling for the reversal of Dr. Djalali’s death penalty and for his immediate release.
